PRESENTATION AT MIMI.
TO CORPORAL ,J. G. MARTIN. A very pleasant gathering took place last Thursday evening, at the residence of Mr. Andrew .Sorrensen, Mimi, the occasion being to make a presentation and farewell to Corporal .1. 0. Martin. Mr. Aylmer Penwarden, on behalf of the Mimi ratepayers on the North Coast road, who were the subscribers to the gift, which consisted of a roil of notes, asked the guest of the evening' to accept the present as a slight token in recognition of the high esteem in which he was held, particularly concerning the detailing, thus far, of the Pukearuhe road. Mr. Penwarden eulogistically referred to Corporal Martin as a man of exceptional capabilities, both as a man and an honest toiler, and he said he was only voicing the general opinion of those concerned in the metalling contract when he said that it was owing solely to Corporal Martin and his brother Tom (who is now on active service at the front) that enabled their father to undertake the contract, and but for that he could safely say there would not be a stone on the road to-day. In that connection, Mr. Penwarden said this country could ill afford to spare such a man, and men of their calibre, and he sincerely hoped j they would both return. Corporal Martin, in acknowledging the I gift, thanked the contributors for their I handsome present, and said he was pleased to know that his labor had been appreciated.
