WESTERN ATTACK.
STRONG ENEMY ATTACK. MAINLY REPULSED. «K" SUCCESSFUL ATR RAIDS. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assoc. and Reuter. Received Jan. 7, 1.40 p.m. London, Jan. 6. Sir Douglas Haig reports: The enemy made a strong local attack against positions on the Hindenburg Line, eastward of Bullecourt. A small parly occupied a sap before the front trench. The enemy was repulsed on the remainder of the front, before reaching our positions. Hostile artillery lias been active north-east of Ypres. Our aeroplanes on Friday dropped 250 bombs on Denain, Ledeg, Menin and Roulers railway stations. Air fighting lias been mostly confined to the northern portion of the front, where we brought down eight and drove down two enemy machines. Five of ours are missing. We bombed last night factories, railway communications and other targets of military importance at Maizieres les Metz. All our machines returned safely.
