ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Elthara, Dec. 2'.). At the last meeting of the Borough Council a deputation, of two, representing the School Committee, applied lor a grant of .£25 towards repairing the swimming Jjatli in the school ground*. Unfortunately the baths are not watertight, there being several cracks in the cement through which the water escapes. A councillor suggested that if the committee ran a picture benefit they would probably secure a larger sum than the council could officially grant. The committee preferred a. straight-out donation, but, after a little consideration, fell in with the council's wish, so now the hitter's donation may be reckoned according to' the activity of the committee and the agility of scholars in disposing of tickets. Two councillors showed their patriotism by promising to take season tickets for the baths. Tradespeople report good business during Christinas, despite the fact that there are so many other calls on the pocket. Tbe country people attended in large numbers. Our bowlers had a fine day at Hawera ou Wednesday, and. what was pleasing to record, tied in--the number or* points in an all-day contest.
