INGLEWOOD.
(From Our Own Correspondent). Ingle wood, Dec. 29. At a recent meeting of the Fire Brigade, held at the station, the following officers were nominated: Captain, Alf Coldwell; lieutenant, S. G. MeLaggan; Ist foreman, J. Hook; secretary and treasurer, J. W. Robb; auditor, S. G. MeLaggan. The, balance-sheet disclosed a healthy state of affairs, while the town had been immune from fires. That the most cordial relations exist between officers and brigadesmen is shown by the fact that the above nominations practically mean their re-election. Messrs. Coldwell and MeLaggan are real enthusiasts, and they have been loyally backed up in the past by "Bill" Robb, who seems to make the brigade his particular hobby,. and much of the present prosperity may be attributable to his enthusiasm and judgment. A further'meeting will be held early in the new year, when the election of officers will follow other business.
Naturally the Inglewood Club is pleased at the successful play of the Inglewood bowlers in the Wanganui tournament, skipped by the genial Fred Spurdle. In pre-war days Fred was one of Taranaki's top-hole referees, but since the Kaiser clan has disturbed the atmosphere and caused football to become something of the past, Mr. Spurdle has taken to bowls, and has proved a popular and successful sheet-anchor to many Inglewood teams in tournaments. At the time of writing he heads the "A" section, and if he lands a win there will be much rejoicing in the ranks of bowlers. THE SCHOOL BREAK-UP-. There was a- large attendance of parents and friends at the breaking-up ceremony.at the school. Mr. Evans, the headmastir, read a very interesting report, referring to the splendid progress the scbool is making, also the excellent report of the inspector oil the year's work. He. then Galled on Mr. Trimble, member of the Education Board, to present the prizes. Mr..Winfield, chairman of the school committee, also addressed 'the children. After the presentation of the prizes, one of the pupils, on behalf of Miss Bayly's class, presented tlie latter with a beautiful bangle, on tlie eve of her severing her connection with the school.
