FIRE ON THE KARU. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Dee. 24. I'.arly yesterday morning, the mate of the steamer Karu, berthed at Queen's Wliavi, was awakened by smoke in his cabin. Investigation disclosed that one of the fircmou'ri cabins above the engineroom was ablaze. The mate and some seamen attempted to extinguish the flames wii h buckets of water, but the assistance of the fire brigade hai) to be obtained before the outbreak "was got under. The contents of the cabin were badly damaged, but no other part of the ship was atl'ected. The fire is supposed to have originated through a light having been left burning in the cabin.
The Karu arrived from Greymouth on Thursday, and should have sailed on Saturday for Tarakohe and Takaka. The cargo included a quantity of benzine, which, however, was stowed some distance from the scene of the fire. ADDITIONAL WAR REGULATIONS. Wellington, Dec. 24. Additional War Regulations have been gazetted.
They provide for the deportation to any Allied State of persons liable for compulsory military service in that State.
The regulations also authorise the military or naval authorities to seize, whether on board a ship or ashore, any document or other thing which may be evidence of an offence committed or about to he committed against the war regulations, the Military Service Act, or the Army Act. ,
