SEASONABLE READING.
To the Editor. Sir,—Tlie Strand Magazine for October, at page 398, lias an article thai would be seasonable * reading 1 for our friends, the Moderates, at any time o: the year, but especially at holiday times when some people think U a social act to drink healths—as they say. The article I refer to is by Edwin F. Bowers, M.D.', and is entitled, 'When is a Man Drunk?" It ife, of course, a medical definition, not lhat of the bar-room, or even of the Police Court. The writer says: "Every man who drank alcohol was drunk—in degree, for two or three days afterwards." ]je then pigweeds with his proof, and relates
some experiments and experiences; then he winds up with; "The drinker deludes himself. He only thinks that he is thinking. TJig very first drink has produced a definite, measurable degree of intoxication. Therefore, it seems quite clear that if a man has any brains worth preserving, alcohol is the poo»est preservative he could possibly pick out to use." I would commend the atxive article to my good moderate friends, Mr. ,T. J. Harter and others.—l am, etc., T3feD. H. MAUNDER. 22/12/17.
