Mr. Arnold 0. Sturrock has gone U Auckland, where he is spending a short holiday prior to his proceeding south for the rest of his summer vacation. Mr. W. H. Mr. M. Lynskey, father of Mr. M. J. Lyimkey, of Hawera, died on Friday. He was an old and respected resident of Kaiapoi, where he had resided up til) hi* death.

Niven, M.A., M.Sc., of the staff of the Napier Technical School, has been appointed science master to the Auckland (Seddon Memorial) l'eehnloal College, and takes up big duties at the beginning of next year. Mr. J. A. Young, M.P. for WaUcato, and Mr, Hyde, of Te Kuiti, - visited Plymouth on Monday on a motoring tour. Mr. H. Okey, M.P., toolf them over Smart Road freezing works in the morn- ' ing, and they left for Hawera in the afternoon.

In the latest casualty list the follow* ing Taranaki names appear: Accidentally killed, Lance-Corporal A. J. Crombie (A. C. Crombie, Stratford) j still seriously ill, L. W. aw (Hawera): no longer serious, Sec. i-Lieuteoattt C. H. Wilkinson (Q A. Wilkinson, Eltb«n). The death of Mr. John Wylie a few days ago removes another of the hardy pioneers of North Otago. Deceased wae born in Edinburgh in 1831, and left for Melbourne at the age of 22. He want to the gold rushes at Bendigo and elsewhere, finally leaving for New Zealand, where he arrived in 1888.

Mr. S. McLeod, of Elthata, has received a message from the Minuter of Defence, Sir James Alleii, intimating the death from wounds of Mr. McLeod's youngest son, Robert. Mr. McLeod had six gallant lads at the front, three of whom are still fighting, two invalided home,' nod the youngest has fallen. - •
