THE LATE GEORGE LIST.
AN APPRECIATipN. (By a Co-worker). To the members of the News staff the death at the war front of a colleague who was so highly esteemed as the late J. 0. Lißt came as a great shock. Only those who worked with him could estimate his real worth, his loyalty, his large-heartedness and reliability in an emergency. He was one of the few men remarkable for singleness of purpose—to do his duty thoroughly and conscientiously. Beneath a quiet, almost reserved, demeanour there was an untiring force and unusual intelligence that found vent in whatever he took in hand, while lie was animated by the highest principles of Christianity. Of his work in the church others can speak more fully than the writer, but here, as in his-secu-lar vocation, he gave of his best as lay reader, Sunday school superintendent, and exceptionally active member of the C.E.M.S., always ready and willing to help to the best of his ability, and his early death leaves a gap that will be hard to fill both in church work and on the News staff. It may bo claimed that the raising of the Daily News to its present high position was in large measure due to his help. No more loyal coadjutor could be found, nor one who was ever striving for a higher standard. It was this spirit of ajtruism that formed the basis of his noble character, and impelled him to volunteer for service in the ambulance work at the front; to give up liis vocation, to sacrifice the happiness of home life, and, leaving those near and dear to him, to go forth to succour the wounded without counting the risk. Many others have done likewise—and all honor to them —but there are probably few who were actuated by such high motives as the subject of this appreciation, and fewer still who could face death with such supreme faith and confidence. The writer is grateful for permission to pay this tribute to one whose self-sacri-fice and high principles were an inspiring example of the best type of manhood, and whose memory will be cherished by all who knew him, especially by those who worked with him and obtained a knowledge of his sterling quantise.
