DISTRICT NEWS.
CARDIFF. (From Our Own Correspondent). On Thursday night the usual concert and.prize-giving ceremony was held at the Cardiff school. There was a good attendance, and a very pleasant time was spent. The chairman of the school committee (Mr. J. W. Rogers) presided, and after a short concert given by the pupils, proceeded to distribute the prizes. The concert programme was mostly composed of patriotic songs, part songs and action songs by the pupils of the school. Gladys Hancock and Emma Richards sweetly sang "Put Me in My Little, Bed," and Master Jack and Miss Flora' Fergusson contributed a Highland Fling. The accompaniments were played by Miss Muriel Rogers and Master Leonard Hancock, both of whom contributed piano solos, as also did Miss Freda Belcher.
The prize list was a long one, as every child received a prize. The merit prize list was as follows:—St. 6: Les Hancock 1, Tom Dobson 2, Lena Brown first girl; St. 5: Ethel Dymond 1, Lena Taylor 2, John Fergusson Ist boy. St. 4: Lucy Dymond 1, Elsie Smith'2, Albert Hancock Ist boy. St. 3: Emma Richards 1, Annie Petersen 2. St. 2: Vera Fergusson 1, Iris Taylor 2, Tui Wisnewski Ist boy. St. 1: Freda Wisnewski 1, Laura Hancock 2. \
Attendance''prizes were won by Ethel Dymond, Lucy Dymond, Annie Grecnwell. Emma Richards, Eileen Goble, Etiie Dymond. The first two girls have made full attendance for the last two years, and another of the same family has also made full attendance this year. Two special prizes donated by Mr.E. W. Hancock, for best progress, were won by Ethel Dymond and Leonard Hancock, while Lena Brown also won a special prize for obtaining the most marks .at proficiency exam. A number of other prizes for progress in each standard were awarded Tom Dobson (St. (!), Ethel Dymond (St. 5), Lucy Dymond (St. 4), Emma Richards (St. 3), Vera Fergusson (St. 2), for first place, and others were given for second place, together with merit prizes for the primer classes, and general prizes to all others not receiving one. The headmaster (Mr. Wm. Bicheno) outlined a report on the year's work, in [which, after enumerating the successes ofj the past year, he specially emphasised the necessity for regular attendance, parents' co-operation with the school, and for children of the present generation to receive a better education to enable them to hold their own in after-war conditions.
Mr. Rogers thanked the people for their attendance, and, after supper was dispensed, dancing continued until a late hour, Mr. Fox supplying the music. .
