SELLING DRINKS ON SUNDAY.
IN A MARBLE BAR. A case was li.'anl in the Magi>trati''s Court vosterdfiy in which Frederick Carr, t'l'.e manager of (he New Plymouth Marble Bar, was charged, oh the information of the police, with keeping open Ins shop in a public place on Sunday evening, December Hi, for the purpose of transacting business; and also with exposing goods for sale in view of a public place. Sub-Inspector Hutton prosecuted. -Mr. A. H. Johnstone, who appeared for the defendant, entered a plea of guilty on the fir,st charge. He said that the business had been carried on for over two years and the same practices as that on wljich the charge was based had been in vogue. He said his client did not intend to set up any technical deduce and that he ifcas ljrenarcd to keep strictly within the law in the future. Sub-Inspector Hutton said the business as carried on on Sunday evenings was an annoyance to tins class of people whose church-going habits took them past such establishments. He pointed out that similar cases had been heard and convictions secured in other parts of the Dominion. In the case in question a eonsta-'ble purchased a drink and was seen to do so from the street by another member of the police force. In reply to the Magistrate, the Inspector said that no particular warning had bo?n given to the managers of the Rusinesses concerned, as it was not considered necessary in view the other eases that had been heard. '
The Magistrate convicted and fined the defendant 10s and costs on the first charge and the other charge was dismissed.
The young lady who sold the drink was convicted and ordered to pay costs of the prosecution.
