A BOAT ADRIFT.
TWO MAORIS BLOWN TO SEA A SEARCH RESULTLESS. Grave fears are entertained regarding the safety of two Maoris, Hupara and Tommy Waka, who left Moturoa on a fishing excursion early yesterday mornj ing, and late last, night had not returned. A heavy gale, had been Mowing for the past few days, but had subsided yesterday morning, and some of the fishing boats went out early, the sea being then comparatively calm. Some time later a strong' south-easterly blow set in land the sea rose quickly. A Chinaman, named George, a well-known fisherman, who was also out. in a small boat, took shelter at the Saddleback until the evening, when the gale Moderated, and, after a strenuous pull he; succeeded in returning safely. He saw the Maoris earlier in the day, but later could see no sign of them. About 5 p.m. the dredge Paritutu went out in search, but returned about 10 p.m. without discovering any trace of the men. As they were out in a small flat-bottouicd boat, little hope is held out for their safety, unless they were able to land on one of the beaches along the coast. Hapara is well-known at Moturoa, where he has resided for several years.
