INGLEWOOD.
(from our Own Correspondent.) Ideal weather prevailed for the opening of the baths on Thursday last There was a large attendance of both swimmers and onlookers, and a team came from the New Plymouth branch of the Life Saving Society, in the persons of Messrs D. .1. Hughes (president), Chrislensen and Misses Mclsaac and White, the latter three giving" a very fine exhibition of life-saving, fancy swimming, diving, etc., and receiving a great reception. The local swimmers (mostly members of 'he swimming club) had a short programme, including a couple of fancy items, viz., a race on barrels afid a fancy costume race. There were also a couple of items for school children, the swimming race being won by Brown, with Pitt second, and the dive by C. Evans, with Hawkins second. Mr. Christensen kindly acted as judge. The New Plymouth visitors were accorded a hearty vote of thanks by Mr. Hughes, who mentioned the objects of the society (lifesaving), and expressed his pleasure at learning that the Inglewood school had the best average in Taranaki, as far as swimmers were concerned, via., 50 per cent, which was very good, but they wanted the other 50 per cent, now to learn.
Mr. Herman Sander narrowly escaped serious injury on Friday. It appears that he was driving his ear over the railway line in the centre of the town, and did not notice a goods train approaching. Before he realised his position, he found his car on 'the cow-catcher of the engine, being carried a distance of about 20 feet and thrown on to the cattle-stop. Fortunately Mr. Sander escaped injury, but the car is in a very bad way. The Male Choir, from New Plymouth, intends paying us another visit, and is booked for Thursday next. The ladies' patriotic committee lias the mutter in hand, and a good house is assured. The Wesley Ladies' Guild held a sale of work in the Parish Hall, on Wednesday afternoon and evening, in aid of the Sunday school renovation fund. The stalls were under the following ladies: Plain and fancy stall, Mesdames Collingwood, Richards and L. Sutherland; sweets, Mesdames Paulger, Peterson (2) and Stewart; hat trimmer, Mrs. L. Sutherland. The fund benefits to the extent of about £4O as the resfilt of the effort.
