STRATFORD.

Friday's rain lias freshened things up considerably. To-day it was very noticeable that the farmers were not in town in the usual intttibers.
At Toko on Thursday the Tennis Club opened the season. A good deal of interest was centred in the ceremony, (here being a large attendance of the club members and spectators. Mr. \V. H. Were, president of the club, in declaring the season open, wished the members many pleasant afternoons at this popular pastime. Occasion was also taken of the opportunity to present Miss P.ain, who lias been secretary of the club for many years, with a silver salad bowl. The presentation was made by Mrs. J. B, Ilinc, who, in a neat speech, wished the recipient all success' in her new home.
One of the oldest residents of Toko, Mr. J. Bain, will be leaving shortly, having decided to live in Auckland. Mr. Ha in has been in Toko somewhere about 22 years and 'has thoroughly earned a spell from business, though his principal reason for selling out was on account of his son, Dan. being called up, thus curtailing his business. The residents of Toko intend giving Mr. Bain and his family a pend-ofT in due course.
The cheese factory is now in full swing. The manaocr. Mr J. Kilpatrick, has assumed control. The roads in and around Stratford were showing visible signs of the long epell of dry weather, and the clay blinding spread by the roadmen proved more than a nuisance when the breezes prevailed. Friday's rain has improved matters somewhat, whilst train travellers can converse with a certain degree of comfort and without being obliged to take a diet of dust anil dirt.
