The hall was packed some timo before the recital commenced, and the audience, by frequent and hearty applause, showed that, the performance fully came up to their expectations. It was a trying ordeal for the young folks, but though some of them appeared rather nervous before so largo an audience, they goon gained confidence, and their efforts were encouraged by applause that was well merited by the young performers, and gratifying to their teacher. 'The first item, "A Prayer, for the Prince of Wales," by the' string orchestra (14 strong), was well rendered, and was followed by n bright overture "Marionettes" (Gurlitt), played; by the senior quartette—Miss T. Hirst (Ist violin), Mr. R. George (2nd violin), Miss Bowling (viola), and.Mr. R. Rockel' (Velio), The quartette again appeared successfully in Mendelsson's "Canatonettn," and an allegro by Beethoven. Miss T. Hirst, Masters Thomson, Knowles and McMahon played a nocturne by Gabussi very pleasingly.
The junior quartette~W. Young, M. Thomson, (!, Kidson and J. McMahon—acquitted itself very well in Pleyd'g Op: -IS, playing brightly and pleasingly. Master R. Bothaniley was given a generous share of applause, the audience insisting on his reappearance after his violin solo. Mr. R. Ueorge, as a violin soloist, also contributed a popular number, and received a double encore. Mr. F. Miss E. Bennett played Chopin's Dcuxieme Impromptu Op. 5(1, a composition calling for much technical skill and intelligent int.erpretaiton, in a manner that pleased the audidnce. Beethoven's delightfully dainty "Menuct" was selected by Miss M. Young as a violin solo, and, the contribution was very warmly received, the perforltfer being recalled. Misses Dowling (violin), T. Hirst (piano) and Mr. Rockel ('cello) were responsible for one of the brightest items: of the programme—Haydn's Trio in G Major.
