SIR JOSEPH WARD.

ENTERTAINED AT THE BLUFF. A TRIBUTE TO LORD KITCHENER. By Telegraph.—Pre," As sedation. Bluff, Lost Night. A very cordial welcome was extended to Sir Joseph Ward on his arrival at The BluiT thi* afternoon. Ho was met flt the railway station by the Mayor and councillors, and a large gathering of townspeople. A congratulatory speech was delivered by the Mayor, the Minister making a brief, but appropriate, reply. Subsequently, Sir Joseph Ward was entertained at dinner at the Club Hotel by the Mayor and councillors, and at the conclusion of the function Sir Joseph Ward spoke for some time concerning his experience during his recent trip to England and the Continent. He paid a tribute to the British naw, and eulogised tho work that had been done from the very outset of the war. Ho also paid a tribute to the army, and to the work done by the late Lord Kitchener. It was the wonderful prestige of Lord Kitchener, who was known as a great soldier, that had been to a large extent responsible for the raising of Britain's large army. He did not think they could give too great a recognition of the great work he had done in raising a. great army. It was generally recognised that, but for the great strength of the Motherland and the oversea dominions, we would have been overrun by Germany. We had taken up nrma in' defence of our_ rights, and the rights of the small nations, and the end of the war must come on the basis of a lasting peace • otherwise their sacrifices would have been in vain.
