THEFTS OF GERMAN CROPS.
FIELDS GUARDED DAY AND NIGHT. _____ Strong measures have become necessary owing to the increase io thefts from the agricultural districts in East and West Germany. It is admitted that, while, prisoners may commit sabotage, greater loss is sustained by thefts by the civil population, who rob fields, orchards, and market gardens for food. Tn Western Germany farmers and market gardeners, mostly old men, have been armed with rifles and bayonets and, divided into sections, aro commanded to watch the fields and gardens at night. According to Berlin Forward (Vorwacrts) almost anything can now be lmd in Berlin for money, but prices are fabulous. Peaches are i2s (id each (they cost about 2d in Holland), horse meat is 8-s a lb, melons are 7s each, grapes 4s and Gs a lb, and carrots Is a lb with their leaves.
