DISTRICT NEWS.

SAPONCA. The annual meeting of Uic Volunteer Fire Brigade was held oil Tuesday evening, in the brigade station. Superintendent Ward opened the meuliug, and a vote of sincere sympathy was pasMHl to the'parents of the late Fireman W. T. Eaull, who gave his lifoifor his country; also to Mrs. Bennie, whoso late husband was auditor to the brigade; the memberii standing in silence. Superintendent Ward reported on the year's work. He sajd all gea*, etc., was in Ejood order, and there had been only one call during' the year, all the members responding. The secretary read the balance-sheet, which showed a debit balance of £7 Os id, due to the procuring of medals for long service. The question of clearing off the deficit was discussed, the secretary expressing the opinion that if the business people of the town were inter, viewed, he felt sure the necessary funds would be forthcoming, and it might induce them to attend the brigade's annual meeting.

Mr. E. Mills was then voted to the chair, and the election of officers took place, with the following result: Superintendent, W. 5. Ward; deputy superintendent, A. Molville; Ist foreman, W. Des Forges; 2nd foreman, C. E. Betts; Ist brancliman, :H. McCarty; 2nd branchman, W. B. Fearon; Ist hydrantman, A. E. King; 2nd hydrantman, F. Bertie s treasurer, Mr. F.. Mills; secretary, A. Melville. Superintendent Ward presented tho five-years service medals to Firemen Death, Betts, King, Faull, Williams, Horn. Deputy-Superintendent Melville presented Superintendent Ward with his five-years service medal and six twoyear bars, showing 17 years' service as a fireman. Superintendent Ward presented Fireman Des Forges with his ?<■ years certificate. The members all suitably responded. Since tho meeting a donation of £2 2s has been received from the manager of the Bank of New Zealand.
