Archdeacon Hawkins, who has UeA visiting the Taranaki district, returned to Auckland by the Rarawa last night. Mr. Frank Heed, Government Inspecting Engineer of Mines,- was a passenger by the Rarawa la3t night. A cable from London reports that C Blythe, the cricketer, is reported to ha,ve been killed in action. Police Inspector C. W. Hendry, of Wanganui, is on an official visit to New Plymouth. It is rumored (says the Star) that Mr. M. J. Lynakey, general manager of the Farmers' Co-op. Organisation Society, has tendered his resignation. The death is reported from Wanganui of Mr. Edward Purser, founder of the firm of Purser, Ltd., at the age of, 78 years. Messrs. M. F. and C. E. Purser, of Hawera, are two of the sons. Deceased was an old and respected resident of Wnngumti, and was welt known on the coast. Mr. James Findlay died at his residence, Hill House, Hampden, last week. The deceased gentleman, who was in hie eighty-second year, was born in Fenwii:k, Scotland, in 1836, and When 26 years of age came to New Zealand, arriving at Port Chalmers by th« ship Graasmero, in 1862 For two years he resided in the Taicri dihtrict, but then purchased a small farm in the Hampden district, to which he subsequently added, and there he had lived ever since. Mr. C. McGuihness, of Eltham, met with an unfortunate mishap while proceeding into town from a meeting of the Harbor Board works committee at Moi tnroa yesterday morning. His hat blew [off, and as he was stepping out of the car, which was practically at a standstill, the brakes suddenly seized, jerking him on to the road. Mr. McGuinneas sustained slight scalp wounds, but was able to be present at the afternoon meeting of the board. An official notice in the Gazette announces that the Hon. Thomas Mason Wilford has been appointed a member of the Executive Council and taken the oath of office accordingly. The Govern-nor-General has been pleased to appoint him .Minister for Justice, Minister of Stamp Duties, and Minister of Marine The Gazette announces also that the Hon J. A. Hanan has ceased to tie Minister of Justice and Hon. G. W. Russell has vacated the offices of Minister r.f Sta»p Duties and Minister of Marine.
Mr. Q. H, Buckeridge, secretary and organiser to the Taranaki Farmers' Union, wm. on Tixirsday the recipient of a presentation from the executive and branch representatives in recognition of his valuable services. The president spoke in eulogistic terms of the work Mr Buckeridge had ungrudgingly and unsparingly done in the interests of the farmers, and called on Mr. Lambie to present Mr. Buckeridge with an illuminated address, and Mr. Maxwell to present him with a solid silver tea service for Mrs. Buckeridge. Both speakers spoke appreciatively of his work and integrity, as also did Messrs Washer, Perry, Dawes, Lucena, Hughes, Cleaver, Swindlehurst, Voullaire, Orr and Gaxnlm. Mr. Buckeridge, in replying, stated that at times it had been hard, up-hill work, and sometimes, when be had called meeting* and gone to considerable trouble to attend them, and found no one there, he had thought, was it worth while? But his viewpoint had been that it was worth all one could put into the movement. The view 9 of those who had a distorted idea of the motives that impel men to try to lift up their fellow men had at times hurt him, but they were more than compensated for by the expressions of appreciation he had heard that day. He also appreciated the kindly thought in recognising that the work he had been able to do had been largely "contributed to by his wife's self •sacrifice.
