Mr. R. H. Bartley, tramways wgh* eor and manager, is vwittag Auckland. Word has been received by Mr, W. Taylor, of Egmont Village, that his son, W. J. Taylor, has been admitted to Broekenhurst Hospital, suffering from wounds and- severe effects of gas.: W. J. Taylor sailed with the 23rd Reinforcements. Mr. Noel Harding, who- has be*a a member of the town clerk's staff in New Plymouth for several years,' has been appointed town clerk of Pat'ea. Ho joined the local office as a cadet, and tilled various positions, up tor the outbreak, of the war, when he volunteered .for active service, and sailed with' the Main Body. He saw service oh Gallipoli, but was later invalided home, and on receiving his discharge took up his old work.

In the casualty list published yeaterday, Lance-Sergeant A. H. Prank (C. W. Frank, Strathmore, father) •!»' reported wounded and admitted to hospital. Potts (New Plymouth), R. A. Swinton (New Plymouth), P, C, Short. Another old Normanby boy has laid down his life for his King and' country. Private John Frei, second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. Frei, was killed in action during the recent severe fighting in France. The deceased soldier, was born and educated in Normanby, and was a fine stamp of colonial. He, was a good worker, and as such had made a name for himself in the district. His youngot brother is at the front, and; two sisters remain in New Zealand, for whom much sympathy is felt. At the Presbyterian Church last Sunday evening a memorial service was held to the lato aoldier, and special mention was made also of the late Private J. Riddle.

There passed away at his residence. Havelock North, this week, a very old Hawke's Bay settler, Mr. Cecil Augustus Fitzroy. The late Mr. Fitzroy was born in England in 1844, and was educated at Eton and Cambridge. He came to New Zealand in ISO 7, and resided in Canterbury at Hcslerton for about twelve years. He represented Selwjn in theHouse of Representatives from 18,(1 to 1881, but resigned owing to removal to Hawke's Bay, when) he once endeavored (without success) to reenter Parliament. He resided at Hastings for a considerable period, being J{nyor of that town from 1804 to ISilfl, but eventually removed to Havelock North some years ago. He was a prominont lay member of th«i Anglican Synod.
