LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY.
MONTHLY MEETING. A meeting of the T&ranaki head centre of the Royal Life Saving Society was hold.in the Soldiers' Club last night, when there were present: Mr. D, .1. Hughes (chairman), Misse* White (2) and McTsaac, and Messrs J. Bennett, A. Bullians, J. Walker, C. Bond, K. Christiansen, P. .J. Flanagan, B. U Mcllroy, S. J. Smith, and P. Schwartz (hou. secretary), CORRESPONDENCE.
The secretary of the CitlsMmt' Band Committee, wrote asking if assistance could be given in the Carnival at Pukekura Park, to be held on December 27, and suggesting that a sub-committee should be set up to work in conjunction with the band committee. There wag some discussion on the question and speakers pointed out that the shortage of active member* nude the giving of an exhibition of fancy swimming a difficult matter. Mr. Christiansen said that the water in the lake was the deadest water ne knew. There were probably only two men in N.P who could float in that water and unless permission could'be obtained it would be practically impossible for an effective display to be made. Mr. S. Smith moved that a letter be sent to the secretary of the band stating t'nnt the society was willing to assist in any way it could, and that a subcommittee, consisting of Messrs Hughes, Christiansen, and Flanagan, be set up to work In conjunction with sthe band committee.—Carried.
Mr. A. S. Brooker wrote thanking the committee for electing him a vice-presi-dent, and enclosed a donation of 10s to the association's funds.
Mr. J. Sutherland, Inglewood, wrote that he would be pleased to co-operate in all possible ways to further an interest in swimming. He wa*; secretary of the local school committee £nd chairman of the baths committee, and would give every assistance ho could, ! The secretary of the Opunake Seaside Society wrote asking the local secretary if he would procure a life-saving belt, reel, and line of 500 yards, as thers was no one in Opunake who coulpV mak<> the apparatus satisfactorily. When the work was finished lie would arrange for a meeting to form a branch of the society, and would be pleased to have the help of members of the New Plymouth branch.
The reel will be. ready on November 22, and members of the local branch will go down to give a demonstration on that date if suitable.
Mr. Wyn Irwin, of Cliristchurch, wrote offering to detail his methods of teaching life-saving to school children. Mr. J. Laing wrote that he had written to the head teachers of Waitara, Waihi, Urenui, and Tikorangl schools re the proposed visit on November $5, and that favorable replies hndjbeeh received from Waihi, Urenui,.and Waitara.
The lion, secretary of the Inglewood branch wrote saying that thero were not many swimmers in the district apart from the schools, The school children were keen on the formation of a lifesaving club. Ho would do all he could to instruct the children. The writer suggested a programme whereby schools in the Inglewood district could be conveniently and most quickly visUcd, The chairman of tho Canterbury head centre wrote to the effect that 50 charts had been posted, and pamphlets would be forwarded at a later date. Varnished mounted charts, suitably framed for hanging In exposed positions, would cost Os (Id In most head centres medallions were being sold at cost, or a small advance on cost, to help popularise the work of the association by keeping the principal award as low as possible in price. GENERAL. Mr. Christiansen reported that. he had instructed girls of the New Plymouth High School in reel and lifesaving work, that one team was already proficient, and another was making very good progress and would be, (he hoped, also proficient before the end of t»t week.
Mr. J. Walker said he had got a team of toys together at theTlteroy school to give demonstrations at the coming school fete in order to promote Interest :\n life-saving. The matter of visits of instruction to schools In the Tnglewood district was left in the hands of Mr. J. Walker to give land demonstrations of the method* of rescue, release, and resuscitation, and of Mr. P. J. Flanagan to confer with Mr. J. Sutherland, chairman of the Inglewood Baths Committee, regarding water demonstrations and'instruction. A sub-committee, consisting; of Miss White and Messrs Bennett aiui Sehwarte, was appointed to make arrangement* for a demonstration trip to the school* of the Opimako district, probably on.llorember 22. A sub-committee, consisting of Misses White and Mclsaacs and Mr. Schwartz, was appointed to arrange for the Tabor Shield competition. Mr. A. Bullians was elected a member of the committee, in place of Mr. N. Winter, who has proceeded to camp. ■ Votes of thanks wero paeaed to Mr. Twuedie for typing'and copying the circular letter of conditions of school com* petitions, and to Misses White and Mclsaacs and Mr. Walker, who had paid a round of instructional visits to Waitara district schools. Mr. Jeffries and -Miss White were elected new members of the association. Accounts amounting to £7 12s 8d were passed for payment. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting.
