GREAT BLAZE AT CHRISTCHURCH.
A THEATRE GUTTED. CITY ORGAN DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—PiW Association. Chrißtchurch, Last Night. A great fire broke out in the city tohight. The Canterbury Hall, comprising Fuller's Vaudeville (His Majesty's), the Canterbury Industrial Association, and the Canterbury Pastoral Association's rooms-and the Alexandria Hall being destroyed. The building, which was valued at £21,000, was recently offered to the City Council for a town hall, but the proposal to buy was rejected by the ratepayers.
In His Majesty's Theatre was the city organ, presented by the Government to the people of Christchurch after the 1900 exhibition. It was valued at £SOOO. The fire started in the dress circle of His Majesty's. It-was two hours' hard fight before the ' brigades attained the .mastery. A fresh breeze carried the sparks, and the adjoining buildings were in danger for some time. Stevens' druggist warehouse, next the Press office, caught, but the flames were fortunately subdued. The insurances are unavailable.
