SENTENCE FOR DESERTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Gilbert Walker, who was found guilty on October 31 on a charge of desertion, has been sentenced by court-martial to sixty days' detention. Walker was arrested at his parents' farm near Tc Awamutu, on October 8. after hjding in the bush for some months. CHRISTCHURCH SHOW. Christchnrch, Nov. 9. The Canterbury Agricultural Show opened to-day in perfect weather. There was a large crowd of people in the city from all parts of the Dominion, and the attendance was well up to the average, though moderate compared with the crowd expected to-morrow. The entries totalled 1424. compared with 1690 last year, and IflOO two years ago. The falling off is chiefly accounted for by a drop in the sheep classes. MILITARY 'DEFAULTER ON TRIAL Palmorston N.. Nov. 8. A reservist named John Franz Eugene Boueke was arrested at the foot of the Tararnas on Monday night as a military defaulter, and was charged at the police court this morning with the theft of articles from a dwelling at Aokautere. The police said that further charges were pending, and asked for a remand till tomorrow, which was granted.
