DISTRICT NEWS.
TARIKT. (From Our Own Correspondent). The danger of speeding along on motor cycles after dark without lights was forcibly demonstrated in this locality on the night of the 4th inst. Ernie Ileal, a returned soldier (these returned soldiers seem to be able to go some!) touring towards Stratford on an "Indian" met .lack Stephenson, a Tariki boy, coasting homewards on a "Triumph." Apparently both were equally under the delusion that they owned the road! and only realised their mistake when they found themselves badly mixed. The returned soldier's luck was in again. The "Triumph" was completely outclassed in the "tanking"' business by the superior weight of the heavy old "Indian," and was down and out in one act. and Jac Uhlenberj, in the vicinity of whose residence the stunt took place, rendered prompt assistance, and conveyed the injured one to the Stratford hospital in his motor car. Dr. Stevens and the hospital staff lost no time in attending to the injured boy, and I hear he is likely to be under their care for so7ne time.
It is a great pity, especially in these times, that so many casualties occur on our peaceful roads, and one cannot help thinking that the penalties for excess of speed limits and driving without lights should he increased and more rigidly enforced, If these offences were classed as crimes and the punishment, in addition to jailing was the eonfiscat(iu of the offenders' vehicles it would go a long way towards putting a stop to this constant wastage of limb and life. The shareholders of the Tariki Cooperative Dairy Company have received notices that an extraordinary geheral meeting will be held on the 20th inst. Owing to the considerably increased area of operation and number of shareholders certain memorandums of association and article* require readjustment, and there is no doubt the time is not far distant when tli<> Tariki cheese factory will have to deal with very large quantities of milk, the produce from laud in the locality a good deal of which in the past has been diverted elsewhere, but is now reverting to its natural and most/!onvcnient centre.
Much regret is felt here at the news of Ifiivato fieorge Kilsby being wounded, and all hope to hear soon he is making good progress toward recovery.
