Stratford, Nov. 7. ■ Tlie weather was vile for the choir concert held at St. Andrew's Hall last evening. Despite this there was a great attendance ample testimony to the talent assisting. Those contributing to the programme were: Mr: and Misses Rogers, Mrs. Kdniondson, Miss Fvffe. Miss Phillips, Mr. H. T,. Beits, Mr. -T. Ranford, Mr. P. Aitken. Mr. P. Ranford, Mr. Sharpc. Misses Fvffe and Robinson, Rev. J. D, Madill, Mr. fa. RetK and Messrs Tissiman,. North, and Tietts (2), As a result of these concerts and voluntary contributions, the choir vestry now in course of erection will opsn free of debt. GENERAL. At to-day meeting of the County Council feeling reference was made to the death in action of Mr. Robert Spence, and a resolution of condolen •<• with relatives in their great loss. Councillors referred in generous terms to the ability and integrity of the. deceased soldier: . The new conductor of the Town Band, Mr. L. Spurdle, has arrived here, lie had a great farewell send-off in Wanganui last evening, members of his late band Queen Alexandra's Own —and the general public turning up in large numbers to the farewell social in his honor. He intends losing no tim> in getting the members under control, and in a short conversation with "your own'' stated he hoped to build up a. band that will be a credit to the town.

A reminder is given of the clearing sale of furniture to ho held on the premise? of #'rs. R. Hudson on Thursday, by Mr. Lauiason. Full details appear on page 8, and tliose on the lookout for superior furniture at auction prices should note the date (Thursday), the locality (Page Street), and attend at 1 o'clock, the thus for opening the sale. A number of people are now 'exercising their minds as to what to send to absent friends. Their dilemma will soon be a thing of the past if they call at Mr. C. E. James' jewellery warehouse and note the fine Christmas cards, greeting's, etc., he has for sale. The shelves are also crowded with those little trinkets so dear to the feminine minds. Now, young men, don't forget the ladies. Ladies, don't forget absent faces.
