HAWERA.
(From Our Own Correspondent)
Hawera, Nov. 0. Cr. Winks, who was the subject of many flattering remarks by the chairman of the county council at Saturday's ineetings, has since had his interview with the Medical Board, and. as the result. of this examination, will not be able to pet to the trenches. His being classed C2 will allow him to continue his work on the council.
Whilst on council matters, I should like to commend the chairman and members on the expeditious manner in which they despatch business. No side issues are allowed on any subject, consequently the meetings, although short, are tho. rough, and no "fireworks." The chairman (Cr. Murdoch) has a good business head, and one can understand his desire that those associated with him should seek re-election.
The ridings of the Hawera County have been re-arranged, and in future the council will have 8 members, instead of 0, as formerly. Cr. Dunlop is the only sitting member who is retiring. The Hawera branch of the Plunket Society is an active one, and I am pleased to notice that, the men are taking more than passing interest in the society. The nurse engaged has a large district to cover, ami doing the major portion of ibis on a pnsh-bike is trying and undesirable, frequently preventing all the ground being reallv covered. The secretary, Mr. W. Hawkins, and other male supporters, are now trying to raise funds to permit of a better means of locomotion being secured. Eltbam is in the Hawera district, and is also moving in the direction indicated. Mr. L. 0, Hooker, the new secretary <if the Dominion AVinter Show, is already working up details. He believes in thoroughness and preparedness; consequently those who wish to see him on business will find him in the vicinity ot the show buildings, rather than at his own shop. He' figured largely in the last show, so it is not surprising that he lias accepted this responsibility of making the next show go. and with ordinary 'backing up should accomplish this ambition.
The writer received a pleasant surprise ibis moj'ning when he "came across" Mr. C'aughiey. Assistant Director of Education. who passed through Stratford by train this morning. ".Tack," as he was familiarly called by his comrades, has gone far since he left Napier. Over 20 years back he was a promising school teacher, a. keen member of a debating society, and a thorough volunteer. With the writer, lie was for many years in a naval volunteer company, and it was like a breath of the old times to shake hands with ".Tack," who is as unassuming as ever, anil unspoiled bv the honors secured by study and experience, 'there are many ex-Hav.kc's Bay residents who will have memories of the late eighties and nineties revived by reading these few lines.
