ELTHAM.
RED CROSS DAY.
From Our Own Correspondent. . Eltham. Nov. 'O, , The promoters of the above dav have every reason to be well satisfied with the results. The totals are not yet available, but wken all ate to hand it is very probable the amount will not befar short of £2OO. At present £lB5 is in hand. The chief items are: Street collections £r9 9? t Sd, including sale of Hags, badges, etc.: Paddy's market. £52 lOs. lea rooms (Town Hall), £2."> lHs lid; flower stalls. £10: W.C.'f.U. "Coster's Barrow," £C> |.I S fid: sundry collections, £4 17s {id; sheep guessing competition, £l4 15s Gd; Mr. Smalley's btall £2 2s Gd. The sum gathered in will prove very acceptable to those controlling the Red Cross funds, and is iinother illustration of Elthain's generosity.
GENERAL. There will be two contests in (he county elections. In the Eltham riding tho sitting members, Crs. C. J. Belcher (chairman) and J. Granville, are opposed bv Mr. W. Hardwick Smith, whilst in the south ri>.ing Cr. A. J. Campbell is being opposed by Mr. .W. P. Best.. Mangatoki returns its three present members, t'rs. Pease. McGuinness, and Gilford, whilst Omona retains Cr. A. McWillinm. In the Kaponga riding Cr. Black hag retired in favor of Mr. M. W. Barker, who, with Cr. Messena. will look after the western portion of the county. At the close of the Red Cross Day those responsible for the custody of the sheep used in the guessing competition placed it in a, paddock and securely locked the gate. The other end of the paddock, 1 am told, had neither fence or gate, consequently the sheep soon found the whole borough at his disposal, and after some experimenting found the doctor's lawn the most inviting, and staved there sufficiently long to make its presence apparent. It favored other locali- | ties also, but its absence being noted, it was again secured and this time placed in safe custody. I notice I have done the Eltham president of the bowling green an injustice in inscribing the honor to Mr. Goldstone instead of to Air. Fairhall. With others, I trust his presidency will see the club enjoy many games this coming summer, and this scribe hopes to have the pleasure of writing Eltham as a winner in many contests. Mr. Jacob Marx has been re-elected the Eltham county's representative on the llawera Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. There are many Eltharaites who learnpd with regret, of the death of Mr. J. B. Rennie. In the early days of the Eltham Rifles deceased was a membsr, and in this, as in band and other matters, was very thorough. Some months back the "Titer saw him in New Plymouth, and he was not.then "too good" regarding licalth. The last annual meeting of the Kaponga Dairy Factory, it will be remembered. was tiie first that Mr. Ronnie (the secretary) bad been obliged to miss. Peace to the ashes of a man who lived a quiet life, one who tried to do his best, and what more can one expect? The Sports King. Air. Frank Farrcll, is amongst those who have caught a marble in the first ballot, of the Second Division. A printer . and a draper of this town are also drawn.
