ELTHAM.
From Our Own Correspondent.
Elthnm. Nov. 3. The casualty lists to hand still contain a huge number of familiar names. Eltham, unfortunately, is well represented. Three in the wounded list—.Toe Glentworth, Geo. Collingwood, aii(J Ernie Dive—are well-known Eltham "boys." Dive, although a married man. has been at the front some time, and those who remember the determination he showed wben bidding for a try in the Rugby field were not surprised to find him forsake the sheep run for the battle trench. His injuries are reported As being slight, and we all hope that will be his closeist call, It will be remembered that his brother-in-law, George W. Tayler, also a married man, fell at Gallipoli. Young Glentworth hadn't the years or experience to bring him to the public notice like E. Dive, but he is one of a large family well known here. Collingwood was of a very retiring disposition, but deservedly popular whilst engaged in the local postal staff. With others 1 sincerely hope that the two mentioned have had their worst experience, and will return safe in due course.' The promoters of the Red Cross effort to-day were early'astir collecting, and young girls were to be seen at the railway station selling flowers and badges. Full financial results are not yet available.
Mr. Haselden, S.M.. presided at the inquest on young Smith, the victim of a motor-cycle collision. Death was caused by a fractured skull, and a verdict to that effect was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone. Evidently the Moturoa freezing chambers are full, as during the week consignments of butter were being railed to the Smart Road freezing works. Mr. Frank Farrell, tho Sports King, Eltham, has had a great run on his sporting requisites. Requests for various tennis bats, balls, etc., have been received from Inglewood, Whangamomona, Hawera, etc., showing that the sporting public recognise the good quality he is offering.
