AMERICA'S CALL TO ARMS.
whole-hearted confidence. HIGH PRAISE FOR NEW ZEALAND. t , (Per lUnited Proas Association). Dunedin, October 27. ■America's preparations for war wers discussed by Dr. Stanley Batchelor, who lias just returned from a short visit to the United States and Canada. "Anyone who may have had an idea that America might not enter wholeheartedly into the war should at onco divest himself of that belief," said Dr. aßtcholor. "Profiting by the experiences of Hritnin and France, America is making but few mistakes in tho manner in which she is organising for war. I was' particularly impressed with the efficiency which 'is brought to bear in every department of the war operations. America is confident of herself, and is 'all out' to help to win tho war. The medical examination of the recruits is particularly severe. Jien have to go through an ordinary medical examination, and are then brought before a board, composed of specialists. Ono specialist will confine his attention to the lungs, another to the heart, and bo on. If there is any doubt whatever as to a man's physical state, he is examined with the X-Rays. This all spells efficiency. Absolutely no liquor may be supplied to any soldier in uniform throughout the States. This law is stringently carried out, and acgenerally speaking, without grumbling. I did not see one drunken soldier during my visit to the States. "Educated citizens, both in Canada and the United States, who had read of New Zealand's effort in the war, were unanimous in the opinion that New Zealand had done her share, and more than her share, in sending away men," Dr. Batchelor added. "New Zealand was spoken' of everywhere in terms of the highest praise for the way she has sent forward her men."
