NANCE O'NEIL AT THE EMPIRE TONIGHT "THE FLAMES OF JOIIANNIS" Theatre goers will remember the sensation that the talented actress, Nance O'Neil, caused when she presented. Sudermann's famous play, "The Fires of St, John," or as its original title is "The Flames of Johannis." The great Danish author, Suderman, presented a remarkable play of human passion set amid simple surroundings, but with a plot of powerful drama and tragedy, and Nance O'Neil was truly wonderful as the "child of calamity." In the screen version, the play has been strengthened to a remarkable degree, and it was found possible for Miss O'Neil to portray the two great parts of mother and daughter—the drunken gipsy and tragic girl—probably the finest character acting yet seen on the screen. It is difficult to believe that the hideous unkempt outcast and the sadfaced girl is played by the one woman but the genius of Nance O'Neil enables her to magnetic force and personality. There is a fine topical budget and a humorous Vitagraph comedy on the sup humorous programme. The management announce that owing to previous bookings this splendid picture can be screened to-night only. MARY MILES WINTER & VIRGINIA PEARSON AT EVERYBODY'S TO-NIGHT. An exceptionally brilliant programme is being screened at Everybody's to-night and to-morrow when two popular star artists will appear in the proved successes of two of the most popular producing corporations. Mary Miles Minter is featured in a Mutual drama, "The Gentle Intruder," a play of unusual strength and beauty, in which this winsome little lady is cast in the role of innocence that reforms wickedness, but not before it has passed through grave peril of being besmirched. Virginia Pearson stars in a William Fox production, "Daredevil Kate," and this photo-play is of the type certain to prove a big favorite with the family of regular motion picture goers. It is a story of vigorous life and action set amidst the rough but fascinating life of "Devil's Gap," a typical western mining camp. It is in the rough school of this semi-civilisation that the thin veneer of eastern manners is put to the test and the real man conies to the top in every instance. In the present instance the man comes to the top and he is in the company of "Daredevil KaM," a fascinating cliaracter, hut a woman of sterling worth. It is a. fiine programme and will interest the onlooker throughout.
