CHARGE OF DESERTION By Telegraph.—Press jAssociation. Palmerston N„ Last Night. Frances Joseph Carroll «atne befoi* the court-martial to-day, charged with' desertion. It was shown that Ster ac cused was ordered into camp he wens to the far north of Auckland, where he worked on a farm. The farmer became ' suspicious and dismissed Carroll and informed the police. When arrested, Carroll gave a false name. Mr, Ongley, appearing- for accused, contended, than there was no evidence to that Carroll had actually received offioial noti« Ccation of being called up. He also protested against the waste of, public money involved in the court-martial, in which fourteen Defence Department officials were concerned. Decision was reserved. The local efficiency trustees have resolved to protest to tho National Efficiency Board against the loss of officiency and waste of time involved In trying desertion cases by court-martiaU instead, of in the civil .courts, as provided in the Military Service Act, 1915; also to protest against the calling up of Alexander McTaggart, soil expert and leci ' tin er to the Agricultural Department, bjj a Military Service Board.
