ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent). Eltham, Oct. 23. It is with regret that I have to report the sad news that two more well-known Elthamites have "gone, west." Much sympathy will be felt for the parents of Lieut. Cyril Carnernss, who could not have been long in the danger zone before he succumbed. The writer was associated with Lieut. Carncross for some years, and greatly regrets that a promising life has been cut short through warfare. Ever an ardent soldier, he makes the third gap in the commissioned officers of the Eltham Rifles, the other two being Major Alex. J. Clark and Lieut. G. W. Tayler. The second victim is Norman iPollard, one of a well-known Rawhitiroa family. He has been at the front for some time, and although not so well known, perhaps, to Elthamite* as Lieut. Carncross, those who knew young Pollard will regret to hear of the loss. He was for years assisting his father on the farm, and then enlisted at Patea. He was a fair cyclist, and engaged in road and track racing with a fair degree of success.
