PERSONAL.

Sergeant L. G. Braik, son of the late Inspector Braik, has been wounded. A London cable reports the death of the Rev. Thomas Spurfeon. He had been in failing health for some time, and had a seizure some weeks ago. The Eight Rev. Dr. Cleary has left Ireland en route for Xew Zealand, travelling via San Francisco, and is expected to arrive in his diocese before November.

Mr. O. Carter has received a private cable informing him that his son Edgar is in hospital in France, and that his son Gordon has been wounded, but not seriously.

Second-Lieut. Eric Ryburn, who has been killed in action in Flanders, was the eldest son of the Rev. R. M. Ryburn, M.A., Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.

Mr. Brien, of the local prison staff, has received word that Corporal M. O'Donnell, who was a warder at the prison when lie enlisted, was wounded on October 5, in the neck, abdomen and buttock. Mrs. F. Foote, Devon street east, has received advice that her son, Sergeant S. C. Foot, D.C.M., lias been wounded. Before leaving with the 10th Reinforcements Sergeant S. C. Foot was in the employ of the New Plymouth Sash and Door Factory. Mr. W. Bird, late of Petone, and now on the New 'Plymouth railway staff, has received cable advice that his eldest son, Sergeant W. T. Bird, was wounded on October 2. Before leaving for the front Sergeant Bird was on the stair of the G.P.0., Wellington, and also at Samoa. Captain H. T. Boscawen, killed iu action, was the eldest son of Colonel Hugh Boscawen, of Auckland, formerly of Wellington. He left New Zealand as a private with the Main Body three years ago. Captain Boscawen. who was $1 years of age, leaves a wife and child. I There passed away at the Hawork Hospital, after an illness of several 'weeks' duration, an old resident of Hawera, Mrs. Mary Curtavne, aged 74, widow of the late Mr. John Curtayne. who predeceased his wife only a few months ago. Deceased leaves" a large grown-up family, and a large number of grandchildren.—Star.

A Palmerston telegram reports that 'Patrick Ashe, a Crimean veteran, died yesterday. He enlisted at Athlone, Ireland, in 1852 in the 55th Foot Regiment, which was stationed at Gibraltar for some time. The regiment then moved to the Crimea, and went, through the battles of the Alma, Inkarman and the siege of Sevastopol. Deceased, who was 83 years of age, came to New Zealand in 1870, and resided the greater part of that time in the Feilding district, Mrs. J. A. Bridgeman. of Westown, re. ceived word last night of the deuth of her son, David Langley,, who has been reported for some time past dangerously ill in hospital in France. Private Lang, ley left with the 10th Reinforcements, and saw considerable service in France, being wounded in the eye about fifteen months ago. He subsequently returned to the front, where a sprained ankle dis. abled him. Later, complications ensued, resulting in his death after a long illness. Deceased was the third son of Mrs. J. A. Bridgeman, and formerly resided at Inglewood. Two of his brothers are at the front, one, Willie, being reported wounded on October 4.
