WAVERLEY WHISPERS, (By "Moturoa"). The fields carded for to-day's annual race meeting, to be held at Waverley, are first-class all round, and, with favorable weather, an excellent day's sport seems assured. The horses engaged are an improvement in quality on those of recent years, and considerable interest will be taken in the running of notable performers like Toatere, Analogue, Avon Park, Huslmmn, Colorado, etc. In addition there is a lot of promising "young stuff" engaged and punters on the look out for future winners will scan the youngsters keenly. The course is reported to be in fine order. A feature of the gathering is the presence of the Wanganui Garrison Band, whose high-class music always adds pleasure to the outing. Mr. Tom Cameron will slip the fields, and the judge's box will be filled by Mr. J. R. L. Stanford. An early start will be made with the racing, the Brewer Handicap being timed for 11.30. A nice field of eleven is carded, but Cora ,Ora will probably be reserved for the Flying Handicap, Hushman heads the handicap, but would require to be thoroughly wound up to have a chance with fk>. Avon Park has shown promising form this season, and, at her best, would make light of 8.0. Starengo showed a lot of pace at Masterton, where, the conditions were all against him, and his party are sanguine of success. Interlude won nicely last year, and "Tommy's" filly looks very well at present. Hushabye ran a couple of good races recently, but the last bit may find her out. Probably Avon Park and Starengo will strip as fit as anything in the. race. There is a preponderance of "uni known cattle" in the- maiden race, for which sixteen have been entered. First Line, by Advance—Kallarat, is reported to have shown fair form at Fordel!, but the black is by no means a champion. Favorable reports also come to hand o* the track work of Sartoline. by Sarto— Tourmaline, a stablemate of Humorist. If yon know anything better than these, kind reader, you probably know the winner, though they are much of a muchness at the best.

The Handicap Hurdles has attracted thirteen horses., including consistent hurdlers like Colorado and Mattock. Mr. ■J. Bull's gelding is likely to start a warm order.

The Wilson Stakes is as popular an event as ever, no fewer than twentythree holding their ground in the foiTfurlong flutter. Coolpan has recent winning form to his credit, and h a great beginner, though Revocation, Munition and Inah can also get into their stridesmartly. Weight of Wanganui money would have sent Coolpan out favorite, but the steed has met with an accident, and will be scratched.

Fourteen hold their places in the Waverley— Waitotara Cup, and they are a pretty good lot. Toatere is the racehorse of the lot, but 9.9 is a big weight, and weights beat the best of Uiem. Iceberg is a strong fancy, and the grey has much to recommend him. None of the lightweights have much to reeomment them, though the winners m recent years have come from these ranks. Probably the "heavies" will give their supporters an attractive run for 'their money. Scratching* may materially reduce the thirteen colored for the Flying Handicap, but Turangafnto and Viadinenu have only to go to the post to command heavy support.

A very moderate lot are engaged in the Moumahaki Stakes, but Lady Beaufort has only to be started to decide favoritism. Nobleman is a fair miler, but if a surprise is in store for backers Cello may be the one to supply it. The gathering concludes with the Jackson Memorial Stakes Handicap, for which horses must be in the birdcage at 3.50 p.m.. so that tiie races should beover early. Previous running may shed some li.s'ht on this event, though on paper Munition, Pergola, Goldbearing and Gipsy Gem all look nicely weighted. Brown was a broken-down joekster who had a rooted objection to going to the war, and the tale of misfortune that lie sprung On the medical board almost made the doctors rush for the smelling salts. Brown's complaints embraced everything mentioned in the Family Doctor, things that a young married man ought to know, and a dozen other publications, but it was no use. "Have you ever had housemaid's 'knee?" he was asked. He had. "Have you ever had protuberance of the hip pocket?" He had. "Have you ever had a fit?" No, ■he had not. "Well, you're going to have one now," said the medico, "I've passed you fit for active service!"
