THE SECOND DIVISION.
PROTEST AGAINST INADEQUATE ALLOWANCES. By Telegraph.—'Press Association. Oamaru, Last Night. A mass meeting to protest against the inadequate allowances to soldiers' de> pendents was held last night, and largely attended. The Second Division proposals were explained by Mr. A. E. Lawrence (chairman of local executive) and the Rev. Cyril Tockcr. Mr. K. V. Lee, M.P., attended and discussed the pensions and allowances, and, while supporting many of the league's demands, contended that the Government was faced by financial difficulties. The following resolution was carried unanimously: "That this meeting expresses dissatisfaction with the inadequate scale of allowances for soldiers' dependents, and in their interests urges Cabinet to reconsider the question." Speakers voiced a strong condemnation of the Prime Minister's statements that the Second Division men were not playing the game, and emphasised that the men were asking nothing for themselves, but demanded adequate allowances for their dependents.
