THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY. VOTE OF CONFIDENCE. Received Oct. 21, 3.5 p. m . Paris, Oct. 20. A debate took place in the Chamber upon an interpellation, moved by a Republican, supported by a Socialist, criticising the Government's general policy M. Painleve, replying, dwelt on the diffi culties, especially as to supply, transport and strikes. He emphasised the resolution to prosecute the war until Alsace and Lorraine were restored, and reminded thp Chamber that Mr. Lloyd George, for the first time, had officially declared that Britain would stand by France till Alsace and Lorraine were restored. The Chamber voted confidence in the Government by 30S to 95. DUNKIRK HONORED. Paris, Oct. 19. The Government has mentioned Dunkirk in Army Orders, as maintaining its economic life for national defence and for inestimable services to the army, despite frequent violent bombardments' for three years. [lt will be remembered that Verdun was awarded the decoratjnn of the Legion of Honor for splendid resistance to German attacks in 1916.] NO SEPARATE PEACE. Reuter Service. Received Oct. 21, 11.5 p.m' Paris, Oct. 20. The speech of the Minister of War (M. Painleve) in the Chamber concluded by declaring that the idea of a separate peace had never presented itself to the Government. He believed that the power of the Allies, when wholly co-ordin-ated, would be crushing. No opposition leaders spoke. Despite the largeness of the majority, the newspapers appear to expect a reconstruction of the Cabinet.
