When the appeals of Young and Howell against their conviction for inciting a seditious strike came before the Chief Justice to-day, Mr. Myers, for appellants, said ho had been shown certain telegrams which were not in as evidence' in the Lower Court, and had advised his clients not to proceed. Wellington, Oct. 20.: Charles Johnston, a was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment at the Police Court to-day for having certain prohibited publications in his possession, viz., copies of the International Socialist Review, Direct Action, and Ross's Monthly 'Magazine.. Exemption was claimed for George Wilberforce Wilson on the ground that he was rendering a public service as medical hypnotist. Appellant stated he had been working in conjunction with the medical profession for eighteen months, and asked for an opportunity to continue working for the benefit of the soldiers. The Board decided to recommend Wilon for ambulance, with the suggestion that his services as a hypnotist might be utilised. INQUIRY INTO LOSS OF THE JANE. Hokitika, Oct. 19. The nautical inquiry into the loss of the auxiliary ketch Jane at Okuru, on August 25, was held at Hokitika before I Mr. Hutchison, S.M., and Captain Cox, |'of Greymouth. The court found that Signalman Cuttance was not justified in j giving the signal toi take the bar, and that Captain Vasta was in no way to blame. No order was made as to costs.
