The Rarawa got away last night, after discharging 226 tons of cargo from Onehunga. A suggestion £or improving the sea journey between Gisborne and Napier has been put forward by a Gisborne resident. The idea is the opening up of a channel through the isthmus at Mahia. Discussing the subject with fishermen from that locality, he was informed that the lagoon that opens in the low sandy stretch that connects Mahia with the mainland, extends to within nine miles of the sea on the Hawke's Bay side, and that it would only require a comparatively small amount of dredging to open up a' navigable channel for the smaller class of vessels. A canal through this gap. it is pointed out, would obviate the passage round Portland Island at the extreme southern point of the peninsula, effecting a saving of 26 miles in the journey to Napier.
