WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Oct. 15. A little scare came over people on Sunday evening when an alarm was rung out by the fire bell in Waitara east. There was no appearance of a glow in any direction, but word was soon passed round that a shed at tha back of Mr. C F. Dowsett's was on fire. However, with the aid of a few buckets of water the flames were quickly extinguished. The brigade turned out, and it was deemed advisable to pour more water on to ensure that there were no embers left. The damage was very trifling, but had not Air. Ernest Bayly discovered it in the incipient stages, two sheds would probably have gone. The fire brigade men were well winded pulling the reel up the hill, and it only goes to show the necessity of a shed and another reel for the east side. By the time the men could get to a fire there would be very little of a building left. This week finishes up the baby contest work in town, excepting, of which will be done at the Camp Reserve on Monday next, when the big gala day takes place. To-night the business baby committee have the bi? skating carnival on, when, according to rumor, a jolly evening will be spent. Wednesday night is the freezers' night at the pictures. On Thursday the freezers repeat their big ball, and are already assured of a full house. On Saturday both of the committees are putting in the final run, the : business committee having a Maori day 'and the freezers a parcels day. In both these there should be good money, as patrons are assured of getting value. The Maoris have taken up the idea very earnestly, and are providing a large amount of poultry, etc. Geese will be very plentiful that day, one man giving something like 20 and another 12. With the smaller numbers and the fowls, ducks, turkeys, kumeras, and what not, Waitara should have quite a Christmas day on Sunday. The freezers are giving prizes in their parcels valued from 6d to £l, so there should be no difficulty in disposing of all they have. With a fine day next Monday there should be a large attendance at the Camp Reserve for gala day. A good programme has been arranged, and everyone will find some form of amusement that will interest them. Further particulars will appear in the course of a day or so. The borough council is making a fine job of the work of re-metalling the main road from the pound corner to their boundary northwards. Motorists will very highly appreciate the improvement.
