TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). Concluding day at Dunedin. The Wellington spring meeting opena on Saturday next. Moulu was backed for a ton of money on Thursday, but failed to act in the mud. He is very well at present, and may make amends at Waverley. Turangapito accompanied Moulu to Masterton, but Alex Hal! had one look at the course, and, like several other owners, sent his horses straight home.
Colorado has raced consistently this season. Second at Marton, and first at Danncvirke and Masterton stamps liini as a useful performer, particularly on a heavy traelc.
Menelaus showed no form at all at Otaki. but on Thursday he ran a sterling we. just getting up in time to heat Gazique in the Flying. The A.R.C. Easter winner paid a marvellous "price," thanks mainlv due to the spirited support of Merrie Poto and Chuckle. Midnight Star, winner of the principal handicap at Masterton, is a rather common looking gelding by Starina— Lady Flora. Last season he started five ■times, winning the Ladies' Bracelet at •Hastings. He was a runner in the Marton Handicap last month, but shaped very badlv.
Robur must have just about disgusted •her party last season, as they put in on her several times, but the daughter of Rokeby and Teacup failed to win a race. She was not much fancied at Masterton. and paid a handsome dividend in an anything but "handsome"' field. Paraoa, Menelaus. Sleight of Hand and Killard are the New Zealand Cup winners which have won races recently, and all escape penalties. Paraoa won his race in fine style on Thursday, and 19 evidently well forward in his Cup preparation.
Maniaroa. usually races well on the Masterton course. Last year he won the Spring Handicap there, paying a great dividend, while' on Thursday his supporters were rewarded handsomely when lie beat all but Midnight Star in the 'Masterton Cup.
Twenty-eight, two-year-olds were saddled up for the so-called two-year-old parade at Ellerslie last week, and the tests were got off in two divisions. Mr. E. Alison's br. f. bv Poseidon—Forfar Gal was first home in the first division while Mr. P. Bolton's br. f. Wish Wynne (Marble Arch—Chiara) showed most pace in the second sprint. Wish Wynne is a half-sister to that useful performer King Chiara. Amongst the also starteds •was Egm'ont 'Park (Sylvia Park—Tottie).
Analogue is reported to be in great fettle, and Waverlev-ites would like to see their old favorite brought down for the WaverTey Cup this month. Owners of other equities engaged do not share the wish. Simonides has been added to the list, and will spell until the autumn.
The New Zealand Referee must now be satisfied that it struck a mare's nest when it "went ofi' the handle'' over Hector Gray's ease, and in this week's edition a letter is published from Mr. Alf, Coleman, secretary of the Stratford Racing Club, denying that Gray had resided in the Stratford district during the past twelve months. As is senerallv •known, Gray lived in New Plymouth, and therefore, in licensing Gray, th(> Taranaki 'District Committee acted perfectly within its rights. It was nobody else's business, and the club's action was ■quite in order. Nobody doubted it but the Referee, and the Referee, as stated before, barking up the wrong tree, Astrophel, with Gray up, was made an even money favorite in the Dash Hack Handicap 011 Thursday. and duly won out. Punters had n gruelling time of it up to this, Coolpan being the only other winner fancied to anv extent. Mr. .T. L. Henrys had 1 lie public in trouble from start to finish.
Arrowfield is coming on with every gallop, and is worth ticking off as a horse to follow this season.
Croesus has developed a splint, and pulls up lame after every gallou.
