FLOODS IN CANTERBURY.
CROPS AND 'PASTURES SPOILT. Christehureh, Opt 8. The Waimakariri started rising very rapidly yesterday afternoon, and the result was the biggest inundation for three years. About HI) motorists, enticed out by the fine day, were caught getting back to OSiristchuroh, and most of tliem had to stay in Kaiapoi. Throe automobiles were stuck in the water at Chancy's and had to be pulled out by means of a horse. About a hundred llcreri of Coult's Island are under water. Little damage will be done to stock, but a good deal of crops and pasture may be spoilt. lieale.v reports thai Ihe Waimakuriii is about six feet above the normal level and that it is raining heavily from the northwest. The Eakaiu River is ill heavy flood. Later. The tlood in the Wnimakariri is nott receding. Little damage has been done except to pasture.
