OBITUARY.

HON. J. D. ORMOND. Napier, Oct. 8. The death of the Hon. J 4 D. Ormond took place yesterday. He arrived in the Dominion in 1847 as private secretary to Governor Eyre. He purchased land in Hawkc's Bay in 1852 und was member of the first Hawkc's Bay provincial Council, and was subsequently Speaker and Provincial Treasurer. He was prominent in furthering settlement and reclaiming plans for the swamps of the province. He was a man nf considerable influence with the Natives, and ;i supporter of Sir Donald M'Lean during the Native trouble of the Mxties. He arranged for the protection of Napier during the Hau Hau troubles. He was Government Superintendent of the province in ISO!), and was actively engaged in furthering settlement and immigration. He represented Hawke'a Bay constituencies in the General Assembly from 18(il to 1890, and was a member of four Ministries, and was prominent under Sir Harry Atkinson. He wan called to the Legislative Council in 1800. He took an active part in local politics, in which ho did go d sirvice. He was a very successful farmer, runholder, breeder and owner of thoroughbreds. He hud been ill for two iveeks. His funeral is to-morrow. Sir Francis Bell is to represent the Government and the Council.
