THE SECOND DIVISION.

THE NUMBERS IN VARIOUS

I . CLASSES. The Government Statistician officially computes the number of reservists in the different classes of the Second Division as under: Class A (married men without children) 20,331 n (marrjed men with one child) 21,007 Class C (married men with two children) 24,82s Class T> (married men with three children) 17,233 Class i'i (married men with four children) 10,498 Class P (married men with five more cnndren) 11,320 Total ' 100,134 It is held likely that, in view of probable accretions of First Division men through coming of age and the voluntary enlistment of lads of nineteen, each of the first three classes will suffice for three ballots. On the other hand, however, it is possible that Class A has now 3000 to 4000 more men in it than will be the case when the first ballot is taken. AVhen filling up their enrolment, forms a large number of men wrote "married, two dependents," "married, three dependents," and so on, and all these have been put temporarily in Class A. They are now being circularised. and on affording proof as to the actual number of their children will be transferred to their proper class in the Reserve. If, as a result, Class A only suffices for two ballots, the first ballot for Class B. will probably be held in December next, and that for Class C in March. 1018. If at any time ther» are not sufficient men remaining in a class for a ballot, the remainder of the class will be called up en bloc, as was done witlv the remnant of the First Division, thus ensuring that all the men in the earlier class are called up before the first ballot in the next class takes place.
