CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

I, MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Clifton County Council was held at Waitara yesterday, when there were present: Crs. li. 11, l'igott (chairman), H. Sander, R. T. 'Hicks, 11. M. Purdio, Win. Old, and S. J. Kemiington. The engineer (Mr. C. F. Dowsett) reported as follows:

Waihi Riding.—The foreman recently appointed notifies me that lie has been passed for camp. A competent man, ■therefore, is still urgently needed in this riding. The various depots have been replenished with further stone from the foreshore, but still greater quantities are required, as the upkeep of the main road is not without difficulties.

Tikorangi Riding.—The metal recently laid down has been receiving attention, and for the better protection of the work on the factory hill it should be fenced off. The open crossing near Faull's, on the Ngatimaru road, should be taken out, the road re-graded, and concrete pipes inserted. The metal requirements for the coming season may be enumerated as follows: Bertrand Road, 1-20 yards. Tikorangi Road, 100 yards; Inland North Road, 180 yards; total, 400 yards, at an estimated cost of £l5O exclusive of crushing. The grader is now in this riding, and can proceed with the necessary work as soon as the weather permits.

Ngatimaru Riding.—The boundary bridge at Tarata is now undergoing repairs and will shortly be completed, to be followed by repairs to the Autawa and Pita Road bridges. The work of widening the Matau-Kiore Road is proceeding to an early completion. The monier pipes for the culvert at Smith's will be forwarded this month. Formation work 13 required on the Tirangi Road, which can be carried out without delay if labor is available, or later by the foreman, when present requirements have been attended to.

Urenui Riding.—Culvert renewals and otlier matters have been attended to on the Matapo Road. The gravel face in the Okoke pit has been condemned, and ■other arrangements entered into in respect of obtaining material of better quality. The settlers have been attending to the Okoke and Piko Roads requirements in the absence of a permaent man. The formation eontraet on the Upper Piko Road is nearing completion. The pipes in respect of Mr. Battler's application have been supplied as arranged.

Mokau Riding.—The portion of the Moki Road recently gazetted has been inspected and found to be in fair and reasonable order. As soon as the road is permanently dry, it is proposed to complete the metalling on the Uruti Road, but we cannot risk being held up by adverse weather conditions. Metal patching ha 3 been continuous on the main road during the month. On the Pukearuhe Road a further small supply of boulders have been gathered, and active steps will be taken to complete the formation preparatory to metalling, tohich will follow the Uruti work, and it is expected that the crusher will arrive tit Wai-iti at the end of the present year. The engineer's report was approved, except the Tikorangi metalling, which was reduced to 280 yards. It was decided that the crusher proceed to Waiiti before working Uruti. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr. W. B. Colson, Okoke, wrote asking permission to erect a cream stand on the Okoke Road, -by the side of the metal opposite his property, for the convenience of the collector.—Declined.

Mr. W. T. Jennings wrote stating that iie had already moved in the House this pession in regard to Native rates.—lt ■>vas resolved that another reminder be sent shortly re Native rates, lest the "contents noted" should be lost sight of. The Efficiency Board will be communicated with regarding the rates overdue on a. property belonging to a soldier. WORKMEN'S WAGES. J. Waterson wrote stating that he and others employed at Okau had been given to understand from press reports that they were to be paid lis per (iuy for the month of August, but that they had been paid off at the rate of-ibs per flay. He asked for an explanation. The council considered that no explanation was due, as the daily papers must not be taken as official. Applications were received from A. Penwarden, A. Hutchins, and H. Taylor, surfacemen, for an increase of wages to 13s per day. Tlie engineer said that other counties were now paying the men who controlled and supervised metalling contracts increased wages, and that if the county was to retain its best employees iho wages of its capable men must be brought up to those paid elsewhere, the increase not to be retrospective. Cr. Sander moved that all roadmen should be given notice of dismissal at the end of the current month, and that applications be invited for fresh men at 12s a day, but there was no seconder. On the motion of Cr. Purdie it was resolved that the matter of increased wages of county roadmen on the main roads be left to the discretion of -ihe engineer. ONAERO ROAD. " A deputation consisting of Messrs G. Gaustad, C. Rumbal, and H. Herbert, representing the ratepayers on the special rating district of Onaero Road, waited on the ciouncil. Mr. Herbert asked that some metalling be done on the Onaero Road. He stated that the North Taranaki Company's suppliers at the top of the road were practically cut off from the advantages of the company's cheese proposals owing to the bad state of the road. The estimated cost for metalling 25 chains 9ft. wide and 9in. deep was £IBO, and of this the settlers were willing to contribute one-third ( £6O). This was not all the settlers wanted. They were desirous, when the times became suitable, that about two miles of road should be metalled, and in order to do so they would go in for a loan, and they thought the Government should also be asked to subsidise their their effort at the rate of £1 for £l.

The chairman said that although the settlers might at preesnt pledge themselves to a loan to be raised at some future date it would not be binding. In answer to Mr. Vaughan, Mr. Herbert said the main object of the proposals was to get a workable scheme which all the settlers would support. Mr. Gaustad made a point of the fact that every settler on the road would benefit. The two dips in the road and part of Gibson's hill were the main portions which would be remedied if the present request was acceded to. Mr. Sander moved that the sum of '£l2o be expended on the metalling of Onaero Road, as a subsidy to the settlers' contribution, and that tenders be

invited, to close at next meeting.— Carried. GENERAL, It was reported tliat twelve settlers had recently turned out on the Kaipikari Road, and had done more in that short time than any paid labor would have done iu a much longer time. If other settlers would follow their example it would be of great assistance in getting over the present difficulty of the shortage of labor. ' The Treasury advised that the sum ,of £O3O 9s 3d bad been paid into~the county's banking account, being the subsidy on last year's rates. The subsidies (due to the several ridings were: Mokau Ji £230 12s 6d, TJrenui £147 fis 2d, Tikojfrangi £BO 12s lOd, Waihi £75 3s 3d, N'gatimaru £147 14s 2d. I The tender of Mr. H. Jones for 500 'yards of metal at Uruti (8s) was left 'in the hands of Cr. Old and the engineer [to inquire into. ■ Accounts amounting to £598 4s lOd were passed for payment.
