RESULT OF GERMAN ATTACKS.
'BRITISH ADVANCE 100 YARDS,
POLES AND ALSATIANS AMONG RESERVES.

The headquarters report states: As the result of the> fighting arising out of the German counter-attack yesterday our position beyond Cameron House seems almost, if not quite, restored, whilst elsewhere we advanced 'over one hundred yards. The enemy suH'ered frightfully in his unsuccessful attempts to regain the shell holes area. There is a considerable proportion of Poles and Alsatians in the new troops which the Gc-rmans hurried up to defend the Menin ridge.
i GERMAN COUNTER.ATTACKS
"END IN DISASTER. Received Oct. 3, 7.45 p.m. London, Oct. 2. Mr. Robinson, tho war correspondent,, says the German counter-attacks used up more men without making an impression in the region from the upper part of Polygon Wood to below Tower Hamlets. After heavy artillerying, the Germans came on in three successive widespread waves. The first was far advanced before they were picked out by the guns. Eventually they were scotched by rifle fire before the tine was reached. The second wave was wiped out by tho artillery. The third was broken, but not checked till scattered by rifle fire. Then the enemy turned and fled. Later in the morning attacks by very heavy forces were everywhere stopped. The Germans again bombed the hospitals, killing three nurses and wounding one.
ACTIVITY ON FRENCH FRONT. TWO ENEMY ATTACKS STOPPED. AIR REPRISALS. Received Oct. 3, 11 jp.m. London, Get. 2. A French communique reports: There is marked reciprocal artillerying along the whole Aisne front, especially in the Craonne Bector. Our artillery dispersed the enemy forces which were massing in the region nortli-wcst of Rheicis. The artillery duel \ras particularly intense on the right of Meuse. During the night, from Hainogneux to Bezonvaux, we stopped two attacks on the Beaumont sector, inflicting appreciable losses. Enemy aeroplanes violently bombarded Dunkirk, inflicting serious material damage. There were numerous civilian victims.- By way of reprisals we dropped bombs on Stuttgart, Treves, Coblentz, and Frankfort-on-Main.
