MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THEFT OF PAIR OF BOOTS At the Magistrate's Court, New Ply-, mouth, yesterday, before Mr. A. Crookc, S.M., George Luff, a fireman from the Regulus, was charged with having, on October 1, stolen a pair of lady's boots, valued at £1 18s <6d. The accused pleaded guilty. . Luff came ashore on Monday morning and went to. the Regal Shoe Company, where he bought and paid for a pair of boots. Sometime afterwards 'he returned, a«d was seen to go to a glass and take the boots which he hid under Jiis coat. An employee notified the police but when apprehended the accused denied all knowledge of the affair. Subsequently he admitted the offence and the boots were handed over to the police. i No previous convictions had been recorded against Luff, who is a married ■man with a family, but that his conduct on ship has been unsatisfactory was evident from the fact that the captain: had put his belongings ashore and wished to have nothing more to do with him. The accused had on Monday morn- 1 ing sent £lO to his wife in Wellington. Asked why he had taken the boots, Luff answered that he could only put it down to drink and offered to make any restitution. In view of the fact that there were no previous convictions and that the accused had a wife and family, His Wdrship said he did not consider the case one for imprisonment, but would impose a fine Of £2, in default 14 days' ] hard labor. JUDGMENT
In a judgment summons ease A. H. (Mr. A. C. La wry) v. Charlie (Warn, an order was made for £3 7s 6d, to be paid forthwith, in default 4 /Jays' imprisonment. . /
