THE BUTTER OUTPUT.

AUOKLAXD VIEWS. Opinions expressed last week by Auckland butter merchants, concerning the sale of butter to America, do not support 'the statement made by Mr. T. Wih'ord, M.l\, in tlie House of Representatives on Tuesday, when he said butter was selling m America at 2s 2d lb. Prices on ofrer from Vancouver, said a prominent dealer, have not been sufficiently good to warrant sending butter to America for the last six months. The official quotation for butter at San Francisco on August •30 was Is 3d lb. It bad to be remembered also, he said, that all butter sent to the United States had to be manufactured without preservatives, and this necessitated arrangements .being made a (Considerable time ahead. 'Experience v had shown that any trade in butter with Canada would be spasmodic. In dry seasons there would be a demand for the New Zealand article, but in normal seasons there was sufficient butter produced in the country to provide for all requirements. Referring to the suggestion of ■profiteering, he said the pledge given to the Government by exporters not to. make any purchase of the new season's butter had been kept. Those interested in the butter industry were anxiously awaiting information as to the proposed .purchase of the Government.
