NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE. A meeting of the works committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess), Crs. J. Clarke, J. W. Hayden, W. F. Short, E. Grifliths, W. A. Collis, E. J. Deare and G. W. Browne. A letter was received from Mr. Stanley Smith regarding the matter of widening Mangorci road, where it junctions with Devon street, pointing out the need of carrying out (he work with as little delay as possible. The letter pointed out that the position was changed since it was last considered, when Mr. Harris was asking £2OO for the strip of land which must be acquired from him. He had now agreed to accept £l7O. Mr. Burnett had agreed to pay £2O towards the cost of doing this work, providing it was completed within the next six Worths. This meant the land would be acquired for £l.lO, a fair and reasonable price. The corner was a. continual source of dancer. .
The Mayor said that now that tho council had something definite to go on, the matter should be considered carefully. Cr. Griffiths moved that Mr. Harris' offer be accepted.
Cr. Browne considered the council would still have to acquire land on the other side of the road before the street could be made full width, ft was of greater importance to improve the upper part of the street than to widen the entrance.
The Mayor said that nothing had been provided in the £42.000 for the improving of this upper portion of the street: Cr. Griffiths said that residents of the upper end favored the widening of the corner.
, Cr. Hayden did not consider this work a matter of urgency. There was a continual push to get money spent on this part of the borough, but other parts, had to be considered, where people had no road worth speaking of. The matter of widening could be u-ell allowed to sfnnd over until the expenditure of the loan was more advanced, and the council knew where it stood. Finally it was decided to hold the matter over for a week in order that the question might be further inquired into.
The borough inspector, Mr. E. Day, wrote suggesting that notice boards bo put up on either side of the West End school, in order to warn visiting motorists of the fact 'that the school was there, as had been done at Wangamii and •Pahiatua. The question arose from a fast-driving case recently before tho court.
It was decided that signs he accordingly erected. < It was decided that no action should be taken in regard to an application from the High School Board for an extra liffht in Ronald street.
