"BOTTLED LIGHT."

DISCOVERY THAT MAY WORK A REVOLUTION. Mr. Ethan I. Dodds, a rich Pittsburg inventor has discovered how to make "bottled light," and is reported to have said that when the invention is perfected it will revolutionise the lighting systems of the world. "The invention is a simple apparatus," says the New York Tribune, "consisting of two large-sized globes, one set within the other, creating a vacuum. The inside of the outer globe is covered with a whitish paste, said by Mr. Dodds to contain the same elements as thlose which produce the glow of fireflies. The application of light, whether sunlight or artificial to the globe for an instant will leave a glow that, lnsto more than an hour, and is almost strong enough to allow the reading of ordinary print," says the investor. Mr. Dodds says his invention is now undergoing a thorough trial in American submarines and battleships. "Mr. Marconi and I have been in conference several times," said Mr. Dodds. "He is very enthusiastic, and said the invention had great possibilities. Tn the first place it wlil save fuel in generating light for submarines. Its use on decks of battleships -will remove the possibility of observance of naval movements, for the light cannot be seen at a great distance. "Mr. Marconi suggested that the invention has great commercial possibilities, and said that if wireless sparks were employed to furnish the original light the use of the invention* at sea would be of tremendous value.* Mr. Dodds has offered the invention free to the American Government.
