DISTRICT NEWS.

KAPUNI. ■ (From Our Own Correspondent). On Friday evening last the Kapuni Hall was packed to its utmost limit : by a large and enthusiastic gathering, the occasion Ijeing a plain and fancy dress masquerade ball, which was held to augment the funds of the Hawera Soldiers 1 Club. Visitors were present from oil round the district, even from Eltham, Opunakc, Pihama, as well o,s from the surrounding townships. There were many pretty dresses worn. Tie first prize for fancy dress was awarded to Mrs. Martin, who was dressed a.i a frog and mho looked and acted the part admirably. Some of the fancy costumes worn were:—i Frog, Mrs. Martin; Red Cross Nurses, Miss L. Sharp and Mrs. Taylor; "Good' Luck," (Miss Wright; Irish Colleen. Miss E. Sharp; Starlight and The Allies, Misses Cately, Red White and Blue, Mi3s E. Atkins; Quale cresses, Miss Spiers and Miss E. Tayjor; ■Tap. Lady, Miss White; Napoleon, Mr. Grey- Chinaman. Mr. Gardiner; Mr." L. Leslie; Clowns, Mr. Fitzgerald and Mr. Phillips. Great interest was taken in the waltzing competition, for which the first prize was awarded to Mr. and Mrs. F. Hughes, of Auroa, while Miss Gardiner and Mr. Jurd carried off the second .prize. The judges for this event were Messrs R. Tremain and W. Johnson, who gave every satisfaction. The supper was supplied by the ladies in their usual wollknown style. The music was in the capable hands of Miss Gardiner (piano) while Mrs. Martin assisted with lier tambourine. Messrs M. Phillips abd W. Johnson well carried out their duties a? M'sC. •while the floor was in good order for dancing.

The Kapuni ladies .ire still hard at work sowing and sending comforts to the brave soldiers at the front and also cook regularly for the Red Cross teas at Manaia on different sale days.
