AMERICA AT WAR.

COMMERCE STANDS ASIDE, Writing to their Wellington correspondents on August 2, a firm in Richmond. Va., U.S.A., says:—"We hope the action of our country in going into this war will materially hasten poace, based on the terms of the Allies. We are in it to win, arc sparing no expense, and are prepared to raise 10,000,000 troops if necessary. "We had hoped ere this to have shipped your order for, . . . but we are anywhere from thirty to sixty davn behind orders on our export business, with labor conditions in such shape that we can see no way of catching up. '-.ml are compelled to fill our orders m due turn. Our Government is building training camps to take care of the troops, which cai's for every available man that can drive a nail and saw a board. In addition lo this, taking one million men from active business and putting them in training, coupled with the fact that all ol' our munition plants are working night and day—three shifts oF eig'at hours each —it makes it practically impossible io get an extra band at any price: and, with our business increasing by leaps and hounds, we are put in a position of being unable to take care of it. We presume you have been through the same thing in New Zealand, and ceil [appreciate our position."
